Bruxie

When I first heard of Bruxie, I initially thought it was just another gimmick to create some hype and buzz.  But after trying their Bruxie Burger with avocado and beacon, I have to admit that they have a pretty solid burger, even without the waffle. The patty was not only juicy, it was quite flavorful. This was an important element of the burger for me since a lot of other burger joints tend to focus on toping and sauces while delivering a bland meat patty.

For those who are looking for a burger alternative, Bruxie also offers a Smoked Salmon & Dill Cream Sandwich. The crispy waffle really did put a different twist to the salmon lox. Also their milkshakes was really rich, Chocolate Shake > Mint Chocolate Shake.

All in all, Bruxie’s Gourmet Waffle Sandwiches has a lot more to offer than just the hype.

FiRE+iCE

After hearing a few friends rave about FiRE+iCE, I figure it was time to try them out. But upon arriving, we found that there was a 40 minute wait for a table for two. A quick look around and you can spot all of the open tables, which made us believe that they were understaffed. Even after we were seated, it took another 10 minutes before someone came by to take out drink order. But when no one returned after 15 minutes, we were fed up with waiting and made out way over to the grill.

Behind the grill was a buffet of raw meat and assorted vegetables. It seemed pretty self explanatory at the time, so we just piled our bowl with food and found a spot at the counter where everyone else was waiting for their food to be cooked. However, no one told us that we needed to line up behind wherever the blinking beacon was (more wasted time). So after finding the end of the line, we realized that there were about 30 people waiting around the grill, all of them waiting for their food to be cooked, but we could only see a few people working the grill. We turned to each other and sighed as we prepare ourselves for another long wait, but this time we get to stand.

Despite the wonderful service that we were not having, the food was quite edible. Although, it seems like most of the flavors came from their overwhelming sauces, and not from the ingredients themselves. When we finished, we were hesitant on going back for seconds. The whole process of getting our food was so un-enjoyable, that it didn’t seem to be worth the effort. At least their drinks were stiff.

The concept of an AYCE Mongolian style BBQ is nice, but FiRE+iCE executed it horribly. It would have been a better experience if they had more staff on hand. It would have been nice if we were able to try all of the different combinations and sauces, but at the moment, FiRE+iCE is nothing more than a cheap buffet with little to no service.

Kimera

Kimera is an upscale restaurant and lounge that caters to the young, affluent population of southern Orange County. We been there before on several occasions to have a few drinks at the lounge, but never ordered anything more than a few sliders and small pizzas. However, tonight we were going to Kimera for a friend’s birthday dinner, so it was a good chance to dive deeper into their menu.

I was still going through my burger phase, so I ordered their Kimera Burger. My friends around me ordered the Four Ounce Filet Mignon and Diver Scallops. I was delighted when waitress took my request to have my burger cooked medium rare, but I knew it was up to the chef to get it right. For drinks we ordered a round of L.A. Waters, which is excellent here compared to most bars in the area.

When the dishes came out, I paused for a split second to give everyone a fair chance before I started to tear away at my burger. Lo and behold, the chef nailed it on the head. The patty was perfectly cooked to a juicy medium rare. The bacon and sauce melded together well with the burger. My friend’s scallops were served with a creamy red brick. We didn’t know what it was at first, but it turned out to be a beet risotto, which was a first for me, but it was very pleasant.  I was also able to try my other friend’s fillet mignon. It was cooked to a medium rare as well and tasted great. It wasn’t melt in your mouth good, but it was still quite tender.

Kimera has always been a great place to drink and hang out. But now I can say Kimera is also a great place to eat dinner at. Their Kimera Burger could pass for a gourmet burger and their other dishes were equally as good. It’s an upscale venue, so try to leave your white tees at home. Also, they stop serving dinner at 10pm, but their lounge is open all night where you can still order some appetizers.
